[Project Background]
In the chemical tanker transportation sector, cargo safety is paramount. Many flammable or chemically reactive cargoes require inerted cargo holds for transport to prevent them from reacting with oxygen in the air, which could lead to fires, explosions, or cargo spoilage. Traditionally, ships generate inert gases by burning fuel oil or using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) systems, but these methods can have limitations such as low efficiency, high carbon emissions, or complex equipment.
[Project Overview]
LUGAS provided the shipping company with a membrane separation Nitrogen Generator system capable of providing 100 Nm³/h of nitrogen with 95% purity and an output pressure of 6 bar. The system's compact design and minimal footprint make it ideal for installation in the confined spaces of a ship. The nitrogen membrane separation system utilizes hollow fiber membrane technology; when compressed air passes through, gases such as oxygen and water vapor quickly permeate through the membrane wall, while nitrogen is selectively retained, thus producing a continuous supply of high-purity nitrogen.
